Astroengine Live CANCELLED… Until Next Week

astroengine_live_header

Apologies for the break in Astroengine Live service. Due to some uber-technical problems, I’m going to have to re-launch the show this time next week. Stay tuned for updates.

For now, check out my Astroengine Live archives and enjoy!

Earlier post:

It’s been a while, but Astroengine Live is back on the air, TODAY! It’s been a fascinating few weeks, so I want to share some of the stuff I’ve come across. I especially want to go into the current Wide Angle over at Discovery Space, “Surfing Spacetime”.

So tune in to the Badlands Radio feed at 4pm PST/7pm EST and all the timezones in between and far away

I’ll also be tweeting throughout the broadcast, so feel free to interrupt me on @astroengine.

Astroengine Live Show #16: Planet X Returns!

promo10

No, no, no, don’t panic! The ‘evil’ Planet X is still a figment of some doomsayer’s crazed imagination. I’m talking about the search for other large planets we have yet to discover in our Solar System. Although the hunt for Planet X probably ended in 1930 with the discovery of Pluto, it’s still fun to see what else is out there in the inky blackness of space. As a recent Astroengine article went crazy on Digg.com yesterday, I thought I’d showcase that little story on today’s Astroengine Live!

Expect a wholesome mix of space science too. Although I haven’t prepared a thing (and it’s fast approaching 5am!), I’m sure the live event will go without a hitch and it will be awesome listening fun. So be sure to tune in! 4pm (PST), 7pm (EST), midnight (GMT) and all the timezones elsewhere…

Astroengine Live Archives Updated (3 Shows)

promo9

There’s six hours of new space news and opinion waiting for you in the Astroengine Live archives! You can listen in to shows 13, 14 and 15 via the Black Vault Radio Network widget on the Astroengine Live page on Astroengine.com, or you can download them via iTunes for some iPod goodness. Any problems listening in, please let me know.

Synopsis of each show and the dates they aired:

11th March, 2009 – Astroengine Live #13: I discuss some of the most interesting space news topics from the last two weeks. Included in the March 11th show:

  • Searching for exoplanets with the recently launched Kepler space telescope.
  • Religious dogma vs. 2012 doomsday theories.
  • When does virtual reality become physical reality? Does it even matter?
  • General news from Astroengine.com
  • The Carnival of Space and 365 Days of Astronomy (featuring the March 3rd podcast by Dave Mosher)
  • And a whole new playlist of music for your listening pleasure.

There’s a lot more besides, as the previous week’s Astroengine Live didn’t happen, so the “lucky” 13th show went ahead with double the dose of space news.

25th March, 2009 – Astroengine Live Show #14 (Bats ‘n’ Books): A run-down of the week in space, plus a special announcement of the upcoming book: “Astroeconomics: Making Money From The Vacuum Of Space” (a joint venture between BusinessWeek.com and WorldofWeirdThings.com blogger Greg Fish and Astroengine Live host Ian O’Neill). Also, I examine all the fuss about the free-tailed bat that died during the March 15th shuttle launch and plans to honour the endeavours of animals in space.

1st April, 2009 – Astroengine Live Show #15 (Carnival of Space Live!): In a very special edition of Astroengine Live and the Carnival of Space, I host the Carnival on Astroengine.com and gave it the run-down on Astroengine Live! A live Carnival has never been done, so if you want a show with over 30 space science topics squeezed into 120 minutes, this is the show for you!

Astroengine Live Show #14: Bats ‘n’ Books

promo8

Today’s Astroengine Live will be LIVE from Woodland Hills, California, to bring you the goings on behind the scenes of some of the most important developments in space. Of course I am referring to the tragic demise of one free-tailed bat and the announcement by Astroengine and the World of Weird Things that we have teamed up and decided to do something audacious and write a book. I think some other stuff has been going on and I’m sure I’ll report on that too, but hey, this is my show and I can be as biased as I like! So, tune in at 7pm EST (4pm PST) to listen to another action/music/information packed Astroengine Live. Today!

Astroengine Live Show #13: Yes, Show Number 13

promo5

Apologies for slipping beyond the event horizon of my sizeable work-pile last week. I think the mass of paperwork stacked on my desk easily breeched the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff limit, plunging any Astroengine Live effort into the black hole that is my office. In short, last week was a bad week. This week holds much more promise, so Astroengine Live will be on the air TODAY at 4pm PST, 5pm MST, 6pm CST, 7pm EST…. and midnight GMT (are you loving my timezone prowess?).

As I am fortunate not to be too concerned about superstition, I’m going to roll with my 13th show, laughing in the face of this “unlucky” number. I’d love to say I’ll have a “13” themed show, but I don’t, so don’t go expecting anything clever. As there are two weeks of fun space stuff to talk about, I think I’ll grab some of the more interesting stories and delve into the details… promptly losing the thread and yacking on about something totally unrelated. Still, be sure to tune in and participate where you can! After all, this show is mainly about my listeners finding fun stuff they want me to talk about, so be sure to email me or Tweet me and I’ll give you a shout!

Astroengine Live Show 12 Now Available in the Archives

A future mission to the Jovian moon Europa could incorporate a life-searching robotic submersible under the icy crust (NASA)
A future mission to the Jovian moon Europa could incorporate a life-searching robotic submersible under the icy crust (NASA)

If you missed the February 25th Astroengine Live, featuring my interview with Dr Richard Greenberg, discussing the release of his book “Unmasking Europa”, this is your chance to listen in. Although I wanted to occupy Dr Greenberg’s entire afternoon with questions about one of Jupiter’s most fascinating moons, I only had 20 minutes, but I think it turned out quite well in the end.

Of course, there was a lot of other subjects besides, including the regular trip to the 365 Days of Astronomy podcast, and a rundown of the movers and shakers of the Carnival of Space and some random thoughts. I think this episode was better than the previous week’s show (#11) that got slammed by the proverbial cricket bat of FAIL when nothing went right. In fact, I am still trying to find the time to assemble the pieces of the audio that got chopped when the laptop, Internet, microphone, earphone, chair, rabbit, desk and brain all conspired against the “Live” part of “Astroengine Live” by taking me off the air more than once. I haven’t even listened to the playback yet, I can’t face it. However, as Jack and I discussed on Paranormal Radio a couple of weeks ago, failure comes with the territory of doing anything live. So what the hell, I’ll keep pushing onwards (and not necessarily upwards)!

Anyway, to tune into Show 12, the “Unmasking Europa” and not-so-technically-inept episode, you can use the radio widget in the top-right hand corner of the Astroengine Live page or tune into iTunes to catch it!

Astroengine Live Show #12: Life on Europa?

promo10

In today’s Astroengine Live (WPRT Radio at 7pm EST), I’ll be discussing some of the exciting stuff that has been going on in space (and in the space blogosphere) over the past seven days. Also, I am very excited that today will air Astroengine Live’s first interview that was recorded last Friday. In the short discussion with Dr Greenberg (author of “Unmasking Europa”), I gained an insight to his excitement about Jupiter’s fourth largest Moon, Europa, and what implications this icy world holds for the search for extraterrestrial life.

All going well, this week should be free of technical hitches (if you listened to Show #11, it was a feast of the worst live radio could throw at me), but the thunder clouds are building outside…

Astroengine Live Show #11 – Is There Anything That Didn’t Happen?

astroengine_live2

It’s not only been a busy week in space, it’s been a busy two weeks in space… yes, I’m going to attempt to cram two weeks of space news into two hours in Wednesday’s Astroengine Live! Apologies for the break in service last week, but all going well I’ll make up for it this time ’round.

So where do I begin? We’ve had satellites colliding, “liquid water” discovered on Mars, fireballs over Texas, stimulus packages investing cash in science (yes, really), possible space tourism from Hawaii… and loads, loads more. I’ll try to fit as much in as possible, so it sould be a good one. Plus there will be plenty of superb tunes from my favourite artists…

Astroengine Live Now Available on iTunes (Oh Yes!)

Astroengine Live, listed with some tough astrology competition on iTunes
Astroengine Live, listed with some tough astrology competition on iTunes

It’s a big day for Astroengine Live! My radio show is now available as an iTunes podcast! I’d like to say that there was some tough competition and my show won through on its scientific merits and entertainment value… but I’d be lying. I submitted the Astroengine Live podcast feed to iTunes, and they listed it. Oh well, I think it’s cool nonetheless, at least now my listeners can tune in whenever they like in all their iPod (iTunes only supports Apple products, right?).

If for some reason you are unable to access iTunes (perhaps because you don’t conform to Apple’s marketing strategy), you can subscribe to the podcast feed directly from the Black Vault Radio Network (BVRN) podcast feed.

Tune in!

Assuming you have iTunes installed on your computer, simply start up the program and type “astroengine” into the search box in the iTunes Store. You’ll then find Astroengine Live in the search results (either listed with an episode number or prefixed with “Black Vault Radio Network”). Ironically, a vastly more popular astrology podcast appears in the search results too (I had a private giggle about that). Don’t mistaken Astroengine with astrology! Be warned, they just aren’t the same

Apologies for having to run an old Astroengine Live recording today, unfortunately I’m currently in a hotel with a patchy Internet connection… Next week’s episode will therefore be excellent2!

Astroengine Live Show #9: It’s a Vacuum Out There

astroengine_live2

For today’s Astroengine Live, I’ll be talking about anything and everything. There will be the obligatory stop-over at the Carnival of Space and a peek at one (or possibly two) podcasts from the 365 Days of Astronomy and then… who knows?

In fact, it would be great if I could get some opinions about last week’s launch of the top secret US spy satellite (or, at least, that’s what we think it is). So check out “Why Are Clandestine Space Launches So Sexy?” and share your views. Do you find it a little frightening that such activities are being carried out in space? Do you think the secrecy adds to the thrill of wanting to find out more? Or do you think the government should be more transparent with things of this nature? As always, send me an email on astro@wprtradio.com or leave me a comment at the bottom of this post.
